REVIVAL BEGETS EVANGELISM
On Saturday two young women held an open-air evangelistic meeting during the day, while others went to a gypsy camp and won many to the Lord. Many homes in the area held all-day prayer meetings. Girls held open-air services outside of drinking establishments. When the drinkers came outside, they became gripped by the Holy Spirit and were saved. Revival fire began to spread as people read the newspaper reports and came to see for themselves.
At meeting time there were such crowds that simultaneous services were held in two churches. A well-known singer was so overcome that he stood up in the balcony and began to sing “Saved by Grace.” The people sang it over and over. At 2:00 A.M. Sunday, both churches were still so crowded that people could not push in or out. People lost all sense of time and had no desire to eat or to go home. One service lasted until 6:00 A.M.
“Above all a sense of the presence and holiness of God pervaded every area of human experience, at home, at work, in shops and public houses. Eternity seemed inescapably near and real,” Efion Evans wrote. “At the end of the second week it was evident that the plans of the revivalist had been superseded by the initiative of the Spirit, and the hopes of Evan Roberts had been overshadowed by the power of God.”3
By now revival blessings were falling in other parts of Wales as well. God used a number of other young people and evangelists. It seemed wherever special meetings began, the holy fire of the Spirit fell. From Carmarthen it was reported that “flood gates of blessing” were opened. On the last day of a conference, “hardly a quarter of an hour passed without a number of people, young and old, men and women, in one part or another of Water Street Chapel praying themselves or others from the bondage of sin to the liberty of the Gospel.”4
From Ammanford came the report, “A heavenly nearness to God was felt by all present…The weeping was general throughout the congregation.” Seth Joshua arrived, and in his diary he notes, “I have wrestled for personal baptism of the Spirit and for a national revival. It has come and I rejoice.” When he arrived, he found “a wonderful fire burning here. The ground is very prepared, thank God.” A day later Joshua wrote, “This has been one of the most remarkable days of my life.”5
Bookshops sold out of Bibles. Coal mines were transformed from places of blasphemous oaths to places ringing with praise to God. Homes were filled with joy and singing. Notorious blasphemers and profane sinners were transformed and in open-air meetings quoted Scripture and testified with Spirit-anointed fluency.
